Brochures

Listed below are the brochures and handouts I collected while volunteering at RLFC.

Art in the Public--completed

I realize that since my second project was not competed as an actual physical shelter it may be difficult to respond to or grade. I am still happy with my choice to volunteer. I just thought I might need to write a bit more about the challenges & things that went well about my project.
Challenges:
The timeframe- I had 8 days to volunteer over a memorial day weekend. I had 4 days of work, a viewing, funeral & burial to go to and personnel to contact in order to volunteer.
Permission- I had no idea that most places that allow you to volunteer want you to fill out an application, complete a background check, may want references & may need managerial or corporate approval
Value- I feel like this art class is already challenging when it comes to grading & placing a value or opinion on a completed project. Since all the students are allowed to go down whatever creative path they choose (or stumble upon) the projects end up being very different. I have no idea what to expect for this project since I did not "make or build" anything physically. I helped "make" meals (though this is not a culinary class). I did make an honest effort at helping a group of people who do need the support right now in their lives.
Went Well:
Meals- I am glad I was able to participate in the actual "making" of the meals
208- I was so surprised that Sean Reinicke said 98 families were given food & 110 meals were served the Tuesday I was at RLFC. It was a great feeling to know that I directly helped, even in a small way. Once I got started with volunteer hours, I feel like I could have kept going. It is likely I will be back to help out at RLFC on another Friday or Tuesday night. . ;o)
I am amazed that it is June already and that the quarter went by so quickly. I enjoyed this art class. Not only for its challenges but for the opportunity to think creatively. I learned that I am more comfortable with clear & defined expectations. Yet, I also learned I can adapt and am surprised with what I was able to come up with for the projects & the pep-work (home work).
I am glad that I stuck with this Art in the Public class & I look forward to taking my next (elective) non-nursing class.

Volunteer

I decided to volunteer my time for our second project. I figured since my goal was 10 hours for my first project (which ended up 20 hours). I should shoot for 8-10 hours this time.

Ideally I would have been able to volunteer at: Habitat for Humanity, the Tacoma Mission, a VA home & a food bank. I was unable to get a hold of anyone at any of these facilities with the Memorial day weekend. I also needed authorization that I was not able to obtain.

I went to Real Life Family Center (RLFC) & donated my time Friday May 25th for 1 hour and chopped a Cost-Co sized bag of green onions (didn't know they could make your eyes water too).

Next, I went to RLFC's resource center & donated my time on Tuesday May 29thth for 6.5 hours.

When I was there on Tuesday there were 98 families given groceries for the week.
There were also 110 meals served for the Celebrate Recovery ministry.

Although my volunteer goal was 8-10 hours (I did 7.5) I feel very proud that I helped serve 208 meals!

Jeanine Butcher at RLFC helped with resource center & Sean Reinicke as ministry leader. 253.846.3875

Homeless Shelter

I have technically been homeless. I was 17 years old & I had to sleep in my car for about 3 days. I didn't realize at the time how dangerous or permanent that situation could have become. My concerns were more focused on where to shower & use the bathroom.

As an adult I have an amazing support system, so if I did become homeless with no family or friend to move in with it would be devastating. I would likely know I am about to lose my home & buy supplies. I would look up homeless shelters as well ...

If that was not an option I would use boxes & tarps that I currently have ...

I would try to make it as familiar as possible & "like home" as I could ...

Memorial Artist Statement

I am not sure if I am able to articulate what my piece was about. I am a nurse by trade & can do "crafty" things but I am far from an artist. I certainly didn't realize the level of dedication one needs to finish a project that takes well over 20 hours but I felt a sense of accomplishment when I was done. My piece was a memorial to "tying your shoe". I did think a lot about construction but not so much on meaning. For me, I think it was about the learning side more than the act of tying ones shoe. I do like the surprise of how much people reacted to my piece, not only on campus but when I would just drive somewhere with it in the car. Absolute strangers would start a conversation just to find out what it was, how I made it & what it was for. That was a really fun interaction I was not expecting.
