Memorial Artist Statement

I am not sure if I am able to articulate what my piece was about. I am a nurse by trade & can do "crafty" things but I am far from an artist. I certainly didn't realize the level of dedication one needs to finish a project that takes well over 20 hours but I felt a sense of accomplishment when I was done. My piece was a memorial to "tying your shoe". I did think a lot about construction but not so much on meaning. For me, I think it was about the learning side more than the act of tying ones shoe. I do like the surprise of how much people reacted to my piece, not only on campus but when I would just drive somewhere with it in the car. Absolute strangers would start a conversation just to find out what it was, how I made it & what it was for. That was a really fun interaction I was not expecting.

  1. My tape figure (Josh 2.0) has found a new home. He was donated to the giving garden in Tacoma. ;o)
